Catalysts are a chemical species that increase the rate of a chemical reaction by providing an alternative reaction pathway to the reaction product, typically by lowering the activation energy. The size and shape of the catalyst pieces is a trade off between the desire to minimize pore diffusion effects in the catalyst particles (requiring small sizes), and pressure drop across the reactor (requiring large particle sizes).

WDGs are a solid, non-dusty granular formulation which disperses or dissolves quickly when added to water in the spray tank to give a fine particle suspension. They provide a system for delivering solid active ingredients to a target organism. They allow for the production of highly-concentrated formulations which are wettable and easily disintegrated on contact with water. WDGs are an attractive alternative to wettable powder (WP) formulations due to their reduction in dust production.

Most pigments used in manufacturing and the visual arts are dry colorants, usually ground into a fine powder. Granular activated carbon (GAC) has a relatively larger particle size compared to powdered activated carbon and consequently, presents a smaller external surface. Diffusion of the adsorbate is thus an important factor. These carbons are suitable for adsorption of gases and vapors, because they diffuse rapidly. Granulated carbons are used for water treatment, deodorization and separation of components of flow system and is also used in rapid mix basins. GAC can be either in granular or extruded form.
Carbon black is a material produced by the incomplete combustion of heavy petroleum products such as FCC tar, coal tar, ethylene cracking tar, and a small amount from vegetable oil. Carbon black is a form of amorphous carbon that has a high surface area to volume ratio, although its surface area to volume ratio is low compared to activated carbon. It is dissimilar to soot because of its much higher surface area to volume ratio and significantly less (negligible and non-bioavailable) PAH content. Carbon black is used as a pigment and reinforcement in rubber and plastic products.
Precipitated silica or amorphous silica is produced by the acidification of solutions of sodium silicate. The gelatinous precipitate or silica gel, is first washed and then dehydrated to produce colorless microporous silica.
